Social media... it's pretty much a given in our daily lives now. If I’m being honest, it’s the first thing I check when I wake up. Before even getting out of bed, I’m already scrolling through Instagram and TikTok. I’m sure some of you can relate, right?
But, here’s the real question. Are we addicted?
Let’s be real for a moment. Social media is everywhere. From Gen Alpha to Boomers, everyone’s plugged in. There are filters, memes, influencers, and endless viral trends to keep us entertained. But how much of this is really healthy? Are we just having fun, or have we lost control without even noticing?
We live in a world where our self-worth often feels tied to likes and shares. It’s no surprise that so many of us experience FOMO (fear of missing out) or even JOMO (joy of missing out) when we take a break from our feeds. We see others living their best lives, and it’s easy to think, “Am I doing enough?”
Here’s the thing: social media is designed to keep us hooked. Endless scrolling, constant notifications popping up, and that one video you just have to watch that turns into ten more. It’s like a never-ending loop of dopamine hits. Can we really stop? Or does it just feel like we’re endlessly scrolling through someone else’s reality?
So, are we addicted? Maybe. But maybe it’s not just about addiction. Maybe it’s more about being engaged— and that’s where the lines get blurry.
Some of us need social media to stay connected, to work, to learn, or even to create. But, how much is too much? If you feel like you’ve got it under control — great! But if you don’t, maybe it’s time for a little detox. Go offline for a bit and check in with yourself.
As for me, I’ve got two Facebook accounts. One’s my older account, connected with classmates, teachers, and relatives. Honestly, I get a bit shy when my cousins like or comment on my posts, so I made a second account to keep it more private. But now, neither of them gets updated much. I also have two Instagram accounts — one I can’t even log into anymore. And of course, there’s TikTok. But my blog? That’s still closest to my heart, even if I don't update it as often as I should.
Each platform has its role for me. My Facebook is my “wall of fame” where I share my milestones and achievements. Instagram is more for my personal life and activities, while TikTok... well, that’s for everything else. I’ve decided I want to make TikTok my main social media account going forward. My blog, though, will always be where I pour out my thoughts and keep my personal diary.
At the end of the day, social media should serve us, not the other way around. So, let’s make sure we’re the ones in control.
